The Trotamundos wines are the brainchild of two winemaker friends, César Baeza and Miguel Besoain. The term “Trotamundos” translates to “globetrotter,” and their winemaking philosophy centers on creating wines with a global perspective, incorporating what they have learned while traveling throughout the wine world to craft unique expressions.

I recently tasted the Trotamundos Pinot Noir Single Vineyard Leyda Valley 2023 and was extremely pleased with its quality and value. This is a Pinot Noir that delivers exceptional drinkability without compromising quality. Sourced from the cool climate of Chile’s Leyda Valley, it showcases bright aromas and flavors of wild red berries—raspberries and strawberries—with a subtle hint of blue fruit as well.

On the palate, the wine is well structured, with vibrant red berry fruit, well-integrated acidity, and mild tannins that lead to effortless drinkability. A stony minerality adds depth and naturally complements the fruit profile. The finish is clean and refreshing, with bright, palate-cleansing acidity.

This wine is very food-friendly. I suggest pairing it with Latin-inspired dishes, grilled skirt steak, or crab-stuffed cannelloni.

Don Melchor Puente Alto Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon — Maipo Valley, Chile 2022 750ml

Chile’s first icon wine and a true benchmark among the world’s finest labels, Don Melchor is the singular expression of the Puente Alto Denomination of Origin — a vineyard planted at the foot of the Andes Mountains on the northern bank of the Maipo River at 650 meters elevation. The Don Melchor Vineyard spans 125 hectares, with vines averaging 38 years of age, rooted in the poor gravel soils and balanced temperatures that define this legendary Cabernet Sauvignon terroir. The 2022 blend is composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 1% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, aged in French oak barrels with 78% new oak.

The 2022 vintage delivered exceptionally even temperatures throughout the growing season, with stable conditions from veraison through ripening and cooler nights that preserved freshness and aromatic precision. Cacique Maravilla | Vino Naranja | Torrontés | Bío-Bío Valley, Sur de Chile | 2025

Cacique Maravilla is one of Chile's most singular and historically significant wine estates, farming ancient, ungrafted vines in the Bío-Bío Valley in the far south of Chile — one of the country's coolest and most remote wine regions. The estate's vines are among the oldest in South America, some dating back centuries, and the winemaking philosophy is rooted in tradition, minimal intervention, and a deep respect for the land and its heritage.

The Vino Naranja is made from Torrontés — an aromatic white grape with deep roots in South American wine history — vinified as an orange wine with 2 to 3 weeks of skin maceration. This extended skin contact gives the wine its distinctive golden color, textural grip, and the gentle tannin structure that sets orange wine apart from conventional whites.

The 2025 is bright golden in the glass. The nose is aromatic and expressive — tropical fruit, ripe tangerine, sweet chamomile, and fresh floral notes. On the palate, dry and full with high acidity, a nice grip from the skin contact, a touch of pleasant bitterness, and a long, fruity, aromatic finish. Beautiful intensity and persistence throughout.

Pair with spiced dishes, grilled fish, sushi, aged cheeses, charcuterie, and Middle Eastern or North African cuisine. Serve slightly chilled.

Brilliant, light golden-yellow in color. The perfumed nose offers notes of cherimoya, ripe pineapple, pear, and banana, with a mineral undercurrent that speaks to the terroir. On the palate, crisp acidity complements a voluptuous structure and body, with flavors of grilled pineapple, spice-poached pear, and toasted hazelnut. François Lurton and his brother Jacques have been producing Chilean wines since 1992, but it was not until 2000 that they found their ideal terroir: 200 hectares in the Lolol area of the Colchagua Valley, where vines had never been cultivated before. The cool, stable climate and disease-free conditions of this high-altitude site — now certified organic by Ecocert — are a paradise for Sauvignon Blanc, producing fruit of exceptional purity and precision. The Humo Blanco is the estate’s flagship white, and the 2024 vintage is a textbook expression of what cool-climate Chilean Sauvignon Blanc can achieve.

The nose is fresh and bright with good intensity: lime, peeled green apple, gooseberry, and wet stones. On the palate it is acid-driven and pure, with a crisp, zingy finish that lingers with mineral clarity. Gravel-rooted and ungrafted — pure Carmenere from the ancient riverbed soils of Maipo.

The De Martino brothers have spent decades quietly assembling something rare: a collection of ungrafted vines in two of Chile's most historically significant wine regions. This Carmenere comes from the Isla de Maipo — a natural island formed where the Maipo River splits and rejoins — where deep gravel deposits left by the old riverbed create the ideal terroir for Bordeaux varieties to thrive without irrigation or intervention.

Vines averaging 25–30 years old are farmed sustainably and harvested by hand. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeast in stainless steel, followed by malolactic fermentation, then aging for approximately 8 months in a combination of older French oak and concrete vats. No makeup. No shortcuts. Just the place.

In the Itata Valley of southern Chile, where the Bío Bío and Itata rivers carve through ancient granite soils, Roberto Henríquez tends some of the oldest vines in the world. Planted between one hundred and two hundred and fifty years ago — pre-phylloxera, ungrafted, and still producing — these vines are a living archive of Chilean viticulture. Henríquez farms them with a philosophy of conscious, traditional, and innovative viticulture, working the soils sustainably across a landscape that is, in his words, the largest and most unique territory of old vines on earth.

The Roberto Henríquez Semillon 100 Year Old Vines Fundo La Unión Valle del Itata 2024 750ml comes from Fundo La Unión, one of the oldest estates in the Coelemu area of the Itata Valley, just 14 kilometers from the Pacific coast. The vision of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) to expand their estates took them to South America in 1988, becoming the first French viticultural investment in modern Chile. Since then, a comprehensive modernization and investment program has been undertaken, oriented towards the production of fine wine using and adapting the viticultural experiences of Bordeaux and other areas where Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) is present. Los Vascos is located in Valley de Caneten (Colchagua), a closed valley in the central zone of Chile, approximately 25 miles from the sea. 

The valley provides a perfect microclimate for high quality viticulture, with Northern exposure to lands uncontaminated by airborne or water-borne pollutants. Daily on-shore winds provide temperature changes between 68-77°F, for optimum maturation of the grapes. With 1,581 acres on the over 5,000 acre estate, it is one of the largest vineyards in the central Colchagua valley, at the foot of Mount Cañeten.
